AMST Awarded Refurbishment and Upgrade Contract for 3 Spatial Disorientation Trainers of the Indian Air Force

Ranshofen, May 2026 – AMST has been awarded a contract for the refurbishment and upgrade of AIRFOX DISO Spatial Disorientation Trainers operated by the Indian Air Force. The systems are installed at key training locations and have been in service for more than 18 years.

The scope of the program includes a comprehensive modernization of the existing devices, aimed at aligning their performance and capabilities with current technological and operational standards. The upgrade incorporates AMST’s Image Generator, providing enhanced image quality and improved training realism. In addition, the systems will be equipped with projection technology by Norxe, enabling state-of the art visualization for a most immersive training environment.

Further enhancements include Night Vision (NV) capability, allowing training scenarios under low-light and night conditions, as well as the integration of an electric motion platform. AMST’s next generation motion technology is designed to improve motion cueing fidelity and to support more effective spatial disorientation training by providing better vestibular and visual stimuli.

In addition to the visual and motion system upgrades, the AIRFOX DISO devices will be equipped with an advanced medical system and a Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device (ROBD) for in-flight hypoxia demonstrations, further expanding the physiological training capabilities of the systems.

As part of the overall upgrade program, the AIRFOX DISO will additionally be equipped with NIGHTFOX VTIGS dynamic NV training system. NIGHTFOX VTIGS (Virtual Terrain Image Generation System) facilitates classroom NV training and allows groups of trainees to observe flights in the AIRFOX DISO with or without NV goggles.

With this project, AMST continues its long-standing support of the Indian Air Force. The contract highlights the importance of lifecycle management, refurbishment, and upgrade programs in maintaining the operational value of established training systems over extended periods of service.

Maximilian Walchetseder, AMST’s Head of After Sales and Customer Support, commented. “This modernization program is particularly meaningful for me, as it directly builds on the initial acceptance activities that I was personally responsible for many years ago. It clearly demonstrates the technical sustainability of our solutions and the strong trust that underpins our long-standing collaboration with the Indian Air Force.”
