UPRT

Upset Prevention and Recovery Training

Needs

TRAINING FOR THE UNEXPECTED BECOMES A MORE AND MORE IMPORTANT ROLE

Modern civil transport aircraft are highly automated and offer a number of useful safety systems. Many primary causes have been mitigated by adding dedicated systems to the flight deck, but Loss of Control in Flight (LOC-I) is still a major threat.

  • Automation on the flight deck assists the pilot and reduces his or her workload
  • Additional safety systems support pilots to keep parameters in the safe regime
  • Many recent incidents and accidents have raised the focus on avoidance of LOC-I events
  • ICAO Doc. 10011 MAUPRT provides the common standards and recommended practices
  • EASA ED Decision 2015/012/R in conjunction with the IATA Guidance Material for UPRT defines the standards for EASA pilots
  • The FAA NOTICE N 8900.241 together with AC 120-111 and AC 120-109A provides the baseline for proper UPRT for pilots flying under FAA license
  • In May 2016, proper UPRT will be mandated for all pilots applying for our flying under an EASA license (March 2019 for FAA pilots)
  • The common sense of all rulemaking authorities is that INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATION IS KEY for delivering valuable UPRT

Solution

DESDEMONA’S WIDE RANGE OF POTENTIAL SIMULATION SCENARIOS AND ITS INHERENT VERSATILITY MAKE IT A TRULY REVOLUTIONARY DEVICE

DESDEMONA is a single source solution for commercial and military simulation. DESDEMONA can operate with up to ± 3 G while having unlimited attitude control of the cabin.

As a member of the consortium of the very successful EC-funded research project SUPRA (www.supra.aero), AMST-Systemtechnik GmbH obtained the right to use the out-of-the-certified-envelope flight-model, which has been validated and rated as having a very positive impact on training by several experts in the field.

DESDEMONA UPRT features:

  • Commercial transport class jet aircraft characteristics (MTOW of around 100 tons)
  • Full replica of a B737NG captain’s side cockpit
  • Force-feedback controls
  • Wide-field realistic visuals
  • Sound simulation
  • Mature evidence-based training syllabus
  • Proficient trainers
  • Effective class room courses on spatial disorientation phenomena, aircraft limitations and analyses of relevant incidents and accidents

Solution

Benefits

DESDEMONA UPRT DEFINITELY PUSHES PILOT’S PERFORMANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL

  • Efficient and superior device for the demonstration of disorientation phenomena and illusions and for delivering UPRT in a safe but most realistic way
  • DESDEMONA provides a wide range of flight procedures such as unusual attitude prevention and recovery, spins and stall manoeuvres, super-agile manoeuvres and aircraft carrier operations, but also ground-based vehicle training and motion sickness desensitisation
  • Improvement of upset recovery simulation including sustained G-forces by implementation of an extended flight model for symmetrical and asymmetrical stall scenarios with wing drop and reproduction of sustained G-load
  • Additional academics by senior experts deliver valuable knowledge in: Spatial Disorientation, Aerodynamics & stall behaviour, aircraft & simulator limitations, Human Factors, case studies of relevant accidents, SOP and OEM recommendations
  • Evaluation was made by Subject Matter Expert (SME) pilots: “The aerodynamic model is very representative of real aircraft; the new centrifuge cueing provides excellent key motion cues, especially loading and unloading; the experience of sustained G-loads has high training value and achieves a perfect balance and positive attitude for flight safety”

VVIP GULF CARRIER - 2014

In November 2014 director of training, postholder and fleet manager of a VVIP flight operator based in the Gulf successfully passed the UPRT on Desdemona. Their common response was that the training is exptremely impactful and helpful for all pilots, but espacially for the SFI,TRI, TRE.
